country living

I’ve lived in the country most all of my life. There’s no question it sits deep in my soul. A few years here and there in cities..all good stuff, I adore the city…however……darling I love you but give me that countryside!! I love the smells in the country… where we are it’s all freshly cut hay and horsey smells. I adore the sounds..crickets and toads year round, the high whiney of the horses, kids yelling,  tractors going down the road…peacocks ye-ow-ling , chickens cackling….these are sounds of happiness to me!  There is great opportunity for the boys to get bored ( yes, I am one those parents that thinks boredom is a true gift!!)  ..and yet…even greater opportunity to find oddball “creative”  things to do. Since I was a kid I have always called them ” country things”…stuff like the never ending search for the baby kittens, building forts from rocks and sticks, shooting each other with potato guns because although we have 65 nerf guns there are no more neon bullets….anywhere.   Catching things…( most anything is included…especially with 4 boys…) also….

Mending and painting fences. This is a constant. I remember it well when I was a kid, back then we used creosote …..god awful skin burning garbage… the horses didn’t like to chew on it much….but I never stopped us from climbing the fences for hours on end.

Rope swings, we have 4 now…this is by far the number one thing our boys like to do. They have all sorts of “freestyle”  rope swing contests…they even climb up into the big old oak tree and hold the knot on the rope and jump…a distance that surprises me every-time I see them do it…but they love it. Their nice strong arms will be good for more garden building chores down the road!! Keep swingin’ boys! (…I know what you are thinking…but,  stitches only once so far….knock on wood)

Cowboys hats…this sort of melts me when my boys put on cowboy hats. I get all little house on the prairie excited….they get all embarrassed by my gushing….and so it goes.

Garden building. ( this goes back to strong arms are good….) We make little additions to our garden all the time, most of the materials we find on the property…. rocks, good compost, nice flat stone….The boys do the collecting….and together we start playing out with what we should do….we run into the feed mill to poke around,… + run over to the hardware store..poke around more….get more seed packets….grab our shovels and go!.. That little skeletal structure is the very beginning  of a chicken coop that my darling boys ( and daddy man) are building. Me excited ?…well…just a wee bit. ( more of that to come)

Lizard catching. This is not such an uncommon scene. An empty bathtub filled with nearly 30 lizards on this particular day  ( same with you eh?) ….and then  the oh , so-sweet…..”mom, it’s cool that we have a bunch of lizards in the tub isn’t it ? ( yes, thank god they are not in the microwave….this is much better) …don’t worry we’ll put them all back outside later…..”    Yes, it’s cool…..don’t hurt them, and yes…release them later…..I don’t even give these things a second thought anymore.

One of our favorite things to do is to watch movies under the stars. John rigs up  big drop cloths ( while I watch..wine in hand…all smiles…MacGyver does the work)  between the trees..the boys drag every blanket  from  the linen closet that they can carry. ( kind of make me nuts later, but it’s worth it….making memories right?….I mean hell…. what’s 17 blankets with a bunch of grass, dog hair and spilled soda to worry about?)  The projector flies….and everyone is happy. ( We have now learned to shut the sprinkler system off…that was a bit  of a shock the first time….ahem,  correction….”wet” , grassy, dog hair, soda spilled blankets)

Then we crash hard. All that fresh air knocks you out.

No matter where you live…get outside man. Nature is crazy good…for your whole happy soul.

Cheers + xx,

T.

dear mom

Happy Mothers Day~…..and…that means to all of you. Each mothers day I celebrate women, I hope we all do. Because even if you did not “give birth” you are more than likely momming someone in your life. You might be a mom to your own mother right now….sometimes it really does switch around . Sisters are much like mothers as they can be honest, clear and giving…+ they can feel guilty, or over bearing or wanting…. all the things mothers can  feel. Aunties are able to fall into this as well…but they add on the spoilage factor…and lose the guilt factor.  Grandmothers naturally are quite something…in one way or another…they can if they so choose……. have hearts that allow them to do things in ways that  moms sometimes cannot  do for their own children….all sorts of things that you meant to do….but you ran out of time, ….or you could not afford, …or  amazingly they just did it for you anyway … because they saw the need….and even though you never asked…they swooped right in and took care of it in a way that made you realize  they were changing lives with their gestures, generosity…and selflessness…..+ their grand kids may not even know it. ( not yet anyway…..)   Girlfriends are also quite worthy of the mom badge. They carry all the mom baggage, but they can dispense it quite differently…they see different things in you …and you in them….there is a wonderful thing that girlfriends can have….some friends you see weekly….others so very rarely, some only by e-mail or phone…..but, If you love them…and they you…you will always be able to pick it all right back up in an instant regardless of the time that has passed. Women have the ability to meet new friends anywhere they go…..being compassionate  comes naturally to most women….so the idea of new friendships is one of opening doors, exploring life… finding more out about yourself and the depth of your own soul….if you are willing to keep your heart open….you will find yourself growing and evolving with each new relationship……therefore giving you the ability to be a better mom…when your child, sister, niece, aunt, friend, grandmother…or mom needs you most.

Wishing you love on this mothers day~

Cheers and happiness,

xx

p.s.   Yes, that’s my own mom on the right in the photo above….dancing, isn’t she marvelous!! ! I am to her left holding my peacock Zelda…the drawing at the bottom of the photo is by our son Gus…when he first started to draw people…he would draw me, awww .

p.s.s. I really wanted to include dads/men in this as I was writing…… of course so many men in our lives hold this same place in our hearts….but fathers day is just around the corner….cheers guys…you know we adore you!

poetic wanderlust live today

Well….here we go! …our new commerce site www.poeticwanderlust.com is now live.

I must take a minute to get happily verbose + share how very grateful we are….I know you know, but…….

We thank you for your enthusiasm in all we create, thank you for your belief …… in the journey, in encouraging us as we skinned  our knees badly but…..are getting back up again, thank you for….. new beginnings,  old friends + new ones we hope , for great  possibilities, + believing in change, for evolving with us, for staying..and cheering us on….I can say that being a designer + entrepreneur of nearly 20 years does not come without its ups and downs, its sweeping criticisms, and sleepless nights….(if you are a small business owner , or know any… they will surely agree…whew~!) You have many full circle moments, you reflect…you grow…..you have no choice but to reinvent…a few times even, you must find a way to stay focused even when you feel lost. You cannot ever get cocky or arrogant…..business is humbling to the core…I love it, and would not know how to do anything else…but it certainly keeps you on your toes…..in a blink it can be taken away, from anyone, no matter how great of an entrepreneur you may be, you simply cannot control everything..as much as you try….and that alone keeps you moving at light speed.  I am so grateful we live in a country that supports the entrepreneur…and that wants small business to thrive. I am not convinced that the challenges many small companies have faced in this economy would allow them any chance to begin again and hopefully thrive as they did before if they were not here….. in the USA~.

If you would so kindly share us with your friends, on your blogs…in your FaceBooks on your Pinterests…anywhere you can…we would be so very grateful…while we are excited as all get out about  our new beginning,  we are clear…it will take a village..and then some. We hope you will be a part of that village in spreading the news about us.  This summer we will be showing this gorgeous line to the trade for retailers and designers at the Los Angeles Gift show, that way you will be able to shop our goods on a local level in your own towns as well.

We make most everything in the line in our countryside studio in California.  I will share more of our process with you in the coming weeks….just know..everything is made by hand, one piece at a time  with great love and care. Twenty years ago John and I began our journey this same way..making things by hand with love and care….so much has happened in those twenty years….but oddly we have never felt more inspired than we do today….much thanks to you~!

You are amazing…thank you for being you, hope you are inspired by our new creations!!

Cheers + Love!!

xx,

T.
