NATURAL, sweet and adorable! A little Tracy in training.

Talking about Lucy and fashion: I did a little research after Tracy’s grandma Lucy post. I just kept wondering, why is everybody wearing black in these ancestral photos. This is what I came up with and would like to share. The wedding dress around 1900 was black. To wear it only one time would have been luxury. It was used later for other festive occasions. Since it was the finest dress in the closet, and photography was rather expensive, and one wanted to look good, of course the best dress was chosen. It was altered over the years. New puffy sleeves, new trimmings, new collar, etc.
The white wedding dress didn’t come into fashion until 1920, however aristocrats and wealthy folks already wore white wedding dresses before that time. Also colored clothes were more expensive. In some regions a black dress belonged to the dowry. After looking more closely at all these photos, I noticed some of the dresses showed patterns, especially the photos not taken in the studio. One indication, the dress had more colors. A white summer dress was mostly worn by unmarried girls.

By looking at one photo from 1916 (with magnifying glass of course) I discovered my grandmother wore a broach which I still have, that made my day! On another dress I recognized the buttons, this dress was blue, gray and hung in the armoire when I was growing up, we used to play dress up in it.

See Tracy, your blog is leading to all kinds of discoveries. Thank you!
