Calling All Color Junkies

Ranunculus are one of those goddess like flowers in my book. I will admit I am partial to them as they were also my wedding bouquet when I married my darling over 20 years ago! They are one of those stop-you-in-your-tracks sort of flowers…they scream joie de vivre… !  They do layers better than a sultry samba dress. Ravishing…exotic..romantic…country.Hot house pink, orange, white…what, what, what!!  How can one flower speak to all that lavish goodness at once….! No idea…but, alas… I spotted  some at the nursery a few weeks back…I screamed, not knowing that they can grow in this” zone” year round..!….My boys were with me and they were certain I had spotted my first rattler…but no….just some popping pink ranunculus.

Pulse quickening stuff that this is for me..I grabbed just a few in mild panic….and the boys grabbed a few more little darlings that they are …no please don’t grab anymore of those luscious flowers for me to plant the minute I get home!!! Back away ….stand down! ( read; hurry grab them all before someone else figures out that they can plant them here too….doy)

I put some in pots…and some straight away in the ground…happy, happy, happy day!   I am still clearly figuring out this year round planting thing….I lived much of my life between zones 4-5….and now I am planting artichokes in November and flowers in February? What the…!  All the nursery people think I am a foreigner …. It’s confusing for me and for them…. in a ” holy crap the whole candy store is jammed packed and you are giving ME the key?… sort-of- a- way”….I will never take this for granted!

What are your thoughts on spring planting… Any flowers you are desperately seeking…secrets to share? So many flowers so little time….!

Cheers + love..and delightful planning!

xx

Aren’t they gorgeous! I’ve never seen them . I am going to ask my nursery to order them in for me this year. It looks as though you might be able to use them as a house plant? In my house I have Cyclamens in the same color that I just love. This past summer I discovered a hearty Cyclamen. I stuck a couple in the ground but they haven’t flowered yet. Maybe this year! We have a family of deer that frequent our yard. Lovely, graceful creatures that love to eat everything! Its been a battle… We have resorted to having our yard sprayed with a natural nontoxic substance that is supposed to be repulsive to the deer-we’ll see how that works out. I have beautiful hydrangea that they seem to adore! I have been waiting in anticipation of big buds opening and overnight-Gone! So frustrating! We were in Kauai Hawaii this past year and came upon Hydrangea growing wild-they were spectacular!( I tried to attach a photo but was not quite sure how to do it) Well we’ve had a mild snowless winter here in NJ! Quite a pleasure after the horrific winters we’ve had the past few . Still too long.. So as I admire your beautiful California weather and am envious that you are planting flowers already, I wait for Spring to arrive here! Thank-you Tracy for adding some color to our days and Happy Gardening… Marybeth

GORGEOUS!!! LOVE the “Bohemian” pot! Tracy, if you’re not familiar with Carolyne Roehm’s “A Passion for Flowers” you MUST find a copy. The cover is a bouquet of hot pink ranunculus and roses and the book is full of the most stunning and mouthwatering photography you will ever see. C’est magnifique!!!

Tracy, I had been a quiet follower of your blog… and purchased many items from your online store. Your blog is bookmarked on my laptop. Today, while enjoying a quiet, gray day at the Oregon coast.. i thought I would hit that bookmark… “just in case”… and I see you are blogging again, and have been for a few months! What a delight… a little gift on this day! I will check back happily and often. All the best to you and yours.

Tracy,
How beautiful. We’ve have had a crazy start to March here in the midwest we’ve actually experienced 3 seasons in 1 day. 60 degrees, rain then snow. Gotta love it though. I am looking to replant a rock garden in the front of my house. Thinking mums and tulips might be a fun mix. Anyone have any tips on how to make this combo successful? Did I miss my window? Thanks for sharing your lovely flowers. I’ll have to buy some at the store to enjoy since there’s not much chance we’ll find any in the ground now.

Oh! I can only dream of flowers. As I mentioned before, the deer, the shade, the drought take all the flower splendor away. These brilliant colors are indeed an inspiration for designing vibrant color patterns. I always feel nature is the best place to look for ideas. Oh, that flower pot I remember from your old farm house, Tracy.
Spring is here, the trees are blooming, a little early this year. We need a lot more rain to fill up our reservoir. Will not plant anything, the way things are right now, perhaps we will not be allowed to water it all by the time summer arrives. This is a busy time for us, a great time to venture out to enjoy nature, before the heat comes back. Last summer was brutal.
Sandi ….I love your art work! Happy Spring to all!

Hey there!
Such a gorgeous weekend! we spent it in LA with my brothers family, always a treat! They nearly moved to Paris, France just recently ( which i was of course extremely excited for them) but they are staying…makes me happy too as we adore being with them! We spent Saturday at the beach watching the kids in the waves and watching the seals dip in and out of the ocean as if they wanted to join the kids. so sweet those darling little seals!
My sister in law wanted to go the chateau Marmont Bar for a cocktail in the eve, and I will tell you…it is one very cool place! so inspiring…there really is nothing better than getting a huge dose of inspiration..it is a shot in the arm…i know you know!
BETH- that pot is an old one, it was found at a flea market about 20 years ago, it had a pitcher that goes along with it…so lovely. i used to do a lot of mosaic work, i still play around with it, in fact i am toying with a project..I’ll share it once done! Siegi, love that you remember this pot! xx
DAWN! I need to see those fields of flowers…just the words, fields of flowers kills me. The poppies have been blooming roadside for about 6 weeks here, and they are so happy and vivid….
cheers and love to you all!
thank you for always coming…and for staying…
xx

Hi Tracy,
I too love them, and my daughter is also going to use them as part of her wedding flowers next July! She wanted peonies but we’ll miss the season so these will make a perfect substitute.
Right now in Indiana I’m looking forward to green, green grass! (and the smell of the earth). But one of my favorite garden flowers that bloom all summer long are the old fashion pin cushion flowers.
I need a dress for the wedding, any chances Poetic Wonderlust will be in business soon???

Did someone say COLOR JUNKIE??????? I adore those “pulse quickening” moments T daaaaaahling!!!!! LOVE Ranunculus sooooooo. Oh my dear beloved T,…..and they were in your wedding bouquet???? Sooooooo fabulously TRACY PORTER,… I should have known!!!!!! Sounds like your weekend was supercalifrag!!!! I do so hope you were wearing your sunscreen!!!!! Although, let me say that research indicates some are wearing so much sunscreen, they are experiencing a Vitamin D deficiency~ this means a bit of the sun is much needed for the bod!!!!! I said a BIT!
Hello RARE BIRDS!!!!! Miss you guys!!!! Hope everyone is well! I am working on a research practicum at Duke these days…… and…… have found a new little addiction in the evenings to accompany my jam jar of vino.
****Have you heard of the *Pistachio principle*????? Well, well,….. it is all the fault of the beautiful state of CA that produces these little delicious nuts. They originated in the middle east/Persia, however, CA is the second worlds largest producer.
These little pistachio nuts sit in a goblet at the bar with another goblet for shells. Every evening one goblet is emptied while the other is filled. Got it now?????
Joy~Rapture, thank goodness for Dr. Painter and his discovery of the *”Pistachio Principle”*. This is based on “fooling ones body into eating less” by the act of shelling and eating one by one, it allows one to feel full faster after eating less. This delightful little dose of protein actually decreases LDL level in the cholesterol. Ok ,…… I am addicted and wanted to share!!!! Can you tell I needed to research something today~ as i am home with an ill Demitasse. A cold and temp that requires Moms nursing. Must get back to her but wanted to say hello GORGEOUS BIRDS and GORGEOUS PEACOCK T!! Stay safe and warm in your nests loves,
Ta Ta for now DURLS!!!!

Popped back in today for a brief moment to say:
ELLE, …you are talented 2 my love, what you experienced in your week was teamwork, and it takes a great deal of teamwork when providing optimal care for patients. You were a part of it and without *YOU* it would not be. Hang in there love, good things happen when you least expect them to. Enjoy the snow for Spring~is~a~coming!!!
SIEGI love, good eye! SANDI is quite the artist, lives a beautiful life, and is a beautiful person. I have purchased her hand painted stones for DEMI and she enjoys them on a daily basis arranging them on her desk daily depending on her focus for the day. I have actually observed her stuff a stone in her pocket p.r.n. Fun popping back in here again today~reminds me so of the good old days!!!! It’s amazing how when I have time to slow down, I gravitate here…….. T is like home base for me!!!!!

I looooove Rununculus as well..I am from upstate NY and had never seen them until we moved to outside Philly and bought them for my oldest daughters first birthday party. I had never seen anything so gorgeous- (this was exactly 13 years ago next week, GULP!!)

I well remember how big a deal the advent of spring is in Wisconsin … the waiting and waiting. I have a special memory of what it feels like when the first warm breeze touches the back of my knees, right below my plaid uniform skirt, as I walk up the stairs at school.

No winter whatsoever in New Orleans this year, but I got several seasons in several days this past weekend. Drove all the way to Luray, VA, for a writer’s retreat. Muggies and torrential blinding rain (crawling through a sea of accidents) up there. Then, enough springtime to open the double doors in the heavily-windowed conference room to enjoy springtime in the mountains. And finally, driving home, gripping the wheel amidst gusts of wind, 20 something temps, and major snow flurries.

Back here, March is perfect. Dry, sunny, and mid 70s temps. I’d like to package it and send it to all of you.
